The Honourable Justice James Emmett was sworn in as a Judge of the Supreme Court of New South Wales on 4 December 2025. His Honour graduated with a Bachelor of Law from the University of New South Wales and a Master of Arts from Cambridge. He was admitted to the Bar in 2006 and was appointed Senior Counsel in 2020. Prior to coming to the Bar, Justice Emmett was the Associate to Chief Justice Gleeson in the High Court of Australia and practised as a solicitor at Mallesons Stephen Jacques (Now King & Wood Mallesons). His Honour joined Banco Chambers in 2019, practicing in public and administrative law, commercial litigation, professional negligence, and maritime law. He was a member of the NSW Bar Association Professional Conduct Committee from 2016 to the time of his appointment, including as Chair in 2024.
