The Law Courts Library is one of the premier law libraries in Australia; elements of its collection predate the formation of the Supreme Court in 1824. The library is a legal resource and information centre for all judicial officers, registrars and staff of the various courts in NSW. The library provides access to an extensive range of online resources including approximately 30,000 e-books, and the print collection comprises more than 400,000 volumes. Legal authorities and accurate information are provided to support the timely and effective decision-making of the courts.
The Law Courts Library acts as a legal resource and information centre for approximately 100 Judges, Acting Judges, Associate Judges, Federal Circuit Court and Family Court Judges and Registrars located across New South Wales.
Legal practitioners may apply for access to the Law Courts Library collections and services on a user-pays basis but do not have borrowing rights.
Access charges are levied on a daily, monthly and financial year basis. Rates and application forms are published on the Law Courts Library website.
Although the access to the Library is restricted to judicial officers, court staff and legal practitioners who hold an Access Card, members of the public can search the Library's online catalogue and request to purchase judgments for a fee.
